Everyone knows the biographies of the great bands, groups that seem touched by a magic wand and are always in the right place at the right time. ‘ELPASO. A punk story’ portrays and pays tribute to the bands that are never at that place and at that right time, but that essentially the pillar on which a music scene rests. ELPASO is named after its hometown that saw its musical career start. The band, formed by Chicano, Mexican and American members, started playing in 1985, and its short and unfortunate biography comes to an end in 1990, just when they had finished recording their first album. It remains in a suitcase and it’s not until the summer of 2014 that Daniel, co-founder of the group, recovers the original tape with the songs. Listening to the tape, 24 years later, he realizes that his friends are «the best group he has ever heard» and decides to pursue his little redemption, writing the biography of ELPASO and working to digitize, remix, master and publish the songs that his friends created in the 80s.

Although they get together in 1985, ELPASO musicians (the band) had grown up as big punk-rock fans in the small, family-hardcore-punk scene of their city. El Paso (the city) is one of many US small cities where the flourishing underground scene was forged. ELPASO members grow up in the small and family-like hardcore-punk scene of their city that, like other local factories, allow an American underground network to be born. The first influences come from punk pioneers such as The Plugz or Teenage Popeye, who shared the stage with The Ramones. New wave bands like One Second Zero / The Victims and hardcore bands such as Red Zone or, especially, the Rhythm Pigs also appear at that time. The members of ELPASO are also shaped and inspired by groups like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Minutemen, Hickoids or Meat Puppets. Do not forget that El Paso, TX is at a key point between Los Angeles (California) and Austin (Texas), making it a mandatory stop for many tour groups. In fact, a few years later, in this same city, At the Drive-In, one of the most influential hardcore-punk bands of the early twenty-first century, will form. A key rock band that will place El Paso’s alternative scenario worldwide.

The documentary ‘ELPASO. A punk story’ aims to portray one of the musical scenes that helped upheave the American underground movements at the beginning of the 80s through the eyes of a band that could have been your local emblem and, in turn, explain the touching story of a group of friends who fought to change the world with their music. For this we share testimonies of musicians from the city, the rest of Texas and the rest of the United States, from that time but also contemporary to us, as well as the members of the band.
